History of the fashion mag

Fashion wouldn't be the worldwide success it is today without the help of the fashion magazine, where beauty, clothing and culture are all combined into one book on a monthly basis for women of all ages to delve into. Let's have a look back at the history of the world's most popular fashion magazines.

Vogue
first published: 1892

"The worlds most influential fashion magazine"
- A fashion and lifestyle magazine
- Available in 16 countries
- In 1909, the company Conde Naste Publishers acquired Vogue
- In 1973 Vogue became a monthly publication
- Vogue claims to reach 11 million readers in the US and 12.5 million internationally
- In 1932, Vogue became one of the first magazine to print a colour photo in its cover
- In 1988, Anna Wintour became Chief Editor

Harper's Bazaar
first published: 1867

"America's first fashion magazine"
- Founded by Harper & Brothers in 1867
- Published by Hearst (multinational mass media group based in NYC)
- Aimed at audience of the upper-middle and upper class
- A monthly publication, although it started as a weekly magazine
- First called 'Harper's Bazar'

Elle
first published: 1945

"If she reads, she reads Elle"
- Worldwide lifestyle magazine of French Origin
- Founded in France in 1945 by Pierre Lazareff and his wife Helene Gordon
- Today it is world's largest fashion magazine, with 43 editions worldwide in over 60 countries
- Monthly publication worldwide but weekly in France
- Launched in the US in 1985
