From soft woolen dresses to risque itsy bitsy bikini's, beachwear have been ever changing throughout the years, and an ever expanding part of the fashion world. And with swimwear going Vintage again, here are the key looks to keep you inspired.
1920
1920
Swimsuits became a shock to the world in the 1920's. With the all new figure hugging pieces that went beyond the long skirts that the fashion world was so used to. Most wore athletic tank suits which stopped at the legs just below the knee. The suit was built for the athletic figure. They also wore bathing hats which suited the famous bobbed hair.
1930
Bathing suits in the 30's were made more feminine and prettier than those of the 1920s. Mini peplum thrills around the thighs were added and the cut from the leg was taken up higher. It was also the start of Hollywood Glamour and was worn by the stars of the silver screen. Backless swimsuits were also made popular in the decade.
1940
Swimsuits now became a lot more smaller due to the fabric shortage and rationing during the war. The swimsuit was cut off midriff and the two piece became more glamourous, with the help from popular pin ups during the decade. The look included halter neck tops with high waisted bottoms.
1950
The 1950's were all about the shape of the body, with the hourglass look popular in this decade. Swimwear became more structured and fitted. They became almost corset like, strapless one pieces that were bias fitted and included padded bras (some with bra cups that were cone shaped.)
1960
With the mod look and the mini skirt becoming popular in the 1960's, swimsuits began showing more flesh and became more risque. With bold and exotic prints the woman's body stood out more than ever before. The pants were now riding at the hip rather than the waist. However if the 60's were too adventurous for you, baby dolls were always a second choice, but the bikini was the dominant swimsuit style.
1970
The 1970's was the birth of the thong bathing suit in 1974, there was no restrictions when it came to swimwear. Designers experimented so much with different styles they began to show every single curve of the female body.
1980
The 80's were all about skimpy swimsuits with high cut bottoms and thin strapped tops. However the swimsuit was in complete opposite to the hair. Big bouncy waves were so popular and the 80's wouldn't of been the 80's without the boom box carried on the shoulder.
